Our Story:
Meeting(s), Engagement, Wedding, & Honeymoon
We traveled in the same academic circles (NBGSA, McNair, & SREB) for years without running into each other. We first met at a McNair conference at the University of North Texas in Spring 2004. We had our first date in Fall 2007, after meeting again in Virginia/DC at the SREB-Compact for Faculty Diversity conference. One date was all it took....
Stephanie was visiting Curtis for Spring Break 2008. Mr. Byrd picked out the perfect ring and surprised Dr. Evans at the Atlanta airport when she was returning from a talk at the National Black Graduate Student Association (NBGSA) Conference in Chicago. After a champagne toast at the P'Sheen Pub, we went to Loca Luna for tapas and salsa dancing.

Our Wedding Weekend:
In May 2009, we celebrated our wedding during Memorial Day with a weekend of fun events. Family and friends gathered at the Hilton in downtown Atlanta to witness our commitment ceremony and share our joy.
Friday morning: Makeovers for the Bride and her crew while the mothers, grandmother, aunts, and friends had tea & treats (...and put the finishing touches on the party favors). Curtis took the menfolk for tuxedo fittings and chill time around Atlanta.
Friday evening: At the wedding rehearsal we had a lot of fun figuring out how to get married. Then, instead of a traditional dinner, we hosted a meet-n-greet game night.
Saturday evening: At Doc & Byrd's Wedding Soiree, we took our holy vows in a New African ceremony and partied for the first time as husband-n-wife at the reception in the Hilton Point of View room (29th floor). Curtis (with a long-awaited band reunion), rocked the joint and we danced 'till late in the evening....
Sunday afternoon: Curtis's family hosted an afternoon cookout with more fun, games, connection, and GREAT food. So many people who are close to us came together to truly make this the wedding of a lifetime.
Heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us to make this weekend more special than we could have ever dreamed.
The Honeymoon Adventure:
After the wedding, we took a cruise (a first for both of us!) to Grand Turk, Ocho Rios Jamaica, and Grand Caymen. We snorkeled, played cards and dominoes with new friends, ate too much food everyday--including lots of ice cream, hiked up the Dunn's River waterfall (the dry side!), and we even parasailed!
A great start to a long life together...by God's grace.
